Jose Wejebe

Cuba-born Jose Wejebe began fishing at an early age in Miami’s Biscayne Bay-- taught by his dad. The youngster became passionate about the sport, reading all he could and sending hand-tied flies to his heroes – Stu Apte, Flip Pallot and Lefty Kreh.  Those heroes shared their knowledge with Wejebe and encouraged his love of fishing and the ocean.

For several years he worked at the Miami Seaquarium as a diver and then a trainer.  But he really wanted to be out on the water every day and purchased a skiff. He earned his captain's license at 18 and became a full-time inshore guide.  He travelled  to Costa Rica, Venezuela and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to learn more about offshore and tournament fishing. But he made time for teaching the next generation of anglers and working for numerous charities.

Wejebe earned a reputation as an exceptional angler, top guide and television personality.  In 1995 his TV show Spanish Fly debuted on ESPN2 and became an immediate hit.  The program blended cutting-edge angling techniques, spectacular video, a flamenco guitar soundtrack and the host's charismatic style.  Legions of fans continue to honor the memory of Wejebe who “always found it easier to show people what the  coolest things about fishing are, rather than just tell them another fish story.”
